VALEGGIO SUL MINCIO, THE LEGEND OF THE KNOT OF LOVE

Valeggio has more “covers” (number of guests for restaurants) than inhabitants. The fact is curious but it very accurately describes the importance of the “cuisine” for this town and for its guests. The absolute star for gastronomy is the tortellino, celebrated during the Feast of Love Knot (usually the third Tuesday in June)

thus named in memory of the legend of the impossible romance between Silvia and Malco, she being a nymph and he being captain of the Visconti troops in the 1300s. Unable to live their love on earth they were sunk together in the waters along the shore of the river, leaving behind them a knotted handkerchief, a symbol of their love. Each year their legend is commemorated and a long table, measuring about 600 meters, laden with food is set in front of the medieval gates. A ticket is required to participate in the dinner, which can be purchased at the restaurants belonging to the association Ristoratori Valeggio, creators and organisers of the festival (www.ristorantivaleggio.it).
