TOSCOLANO MADERNO, BETWEEN THE LIDOS AND THE PAPER MILLS

Both of very ancient origins, the towns Toscolano and Maderno (today joined to form a single town) are on the promontory formed by the delta of the Toscolano River, which separates the two centres.

Maderno developed south of the torrent around the Church of Sant’Andrea. It was the first capital of the Magnifica Patria until 1377. Considered to be of probable Etruscan origin(witnessed by the name itself, tusculum, place of sojourn), Toscolanodeveloped itself to the north of the torrent and along with Sirmione, it is the oldest centre of the lake. For centuries it has been an important place for iron working, but it is the production of paper, of which still today the valley of the Paper Mills represents a historical sign, that has made its fame, with its workshops renowned in all of Europe. Today its well-equipped lidos similar to those of the “Romagnola Riviera”, make it a very popular tourism destination.
