MALCESINE, THE AUSTRIAN SPY

Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) on the 3rd of September 1786 started his voyage towards Italy, with Verona as his destination with this wish: “I shall return as a new man and live to the greater pleasure of myself and my friends.”

On the 13th of September, after having embarked from Torbole for Verona, he was forced to stop at Malcesine, because the midday wind had changed. He found hospitality at the only inn on the harbour, L’Aquila Nera (The Black Eagle), today Hotel San Marco (there is a plaque in memory of this event on the side of the hotel). Goethe started to paint in front of the Castle, so that he could have a souvenir of the beauty of that place. Soon after, he was surrounded by the inhabitants of Malcesine who could not understand why a foreigner would be painting something that to their eyes, for the fact of always seeing the same things, was so insignificant. From that moment, things started to look bad for Goethe, as he was believed to be an Austrian spy. The leader of the town was called. A certain Gregorio who knew a bit of German, helped him to explain the misunderstanding, becoming aware that not only was Goethe not a spy, but that if he had spoken well of Malcesine upon return to his own country, he would have convinced many Germans to come to Malcesine. Time proved him right. Today there are around 100 hotels here. From L’Aquila Nera, Malcesine has gone quite some distance.
