BORGHETTO SUL MINCIO, A JUMP INTO THE MIDDLE AGES

Valeggio and Borghetto are located within the Valley of the Mincio, nestled between the green Morenic Hills; Valeggio is on high, Borghetto below.

Borghetto is a medieval hamlet that has remained almost completely intact.

Already during the era of the Lombards it was used as a ford on the Mincio (see sign at 50m north of the bridge at the right bank) and it was taken by the Order of the Templars as a rest stop for pilgrims who were crossing the river towards Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago di Compostela. This is because it was the safest place to cross the Mincio, which once was very dangerous indeed.

Today it is a very romantic hamlet characterised by the sound of water in movement in the mills and waterfalls that make the place lively at any hour and in any time of the year. There is also a current fashion in Borghetto: romantic couples come here to attach their lock to the gate that protects the mills, a symbol of their love just as it is in Rome on Milvio Bridge.
