ARCO, VERTICAL SPORT

The atmosphere that one breathes in here is sporty. Making the rounds of the city, one finds young people and children attracted to the extreme sports that Arco offers. Here one can do trekking, mountain biking but especially free climbing. The free climbing world cup was held here in 2011.

The city is equipped for this vertical sport and along its roads one finds mainly two types of shops: those for extreme sports and ice cream/pastry shops. As if the snap-hook and sugar are “nécessaire” for living here. Even when one arrives in Arco, they pass by the sign where it is written: “Place of treatment and rest”. Why? The connection in reality exists and it is very precise. From the year 1872, Arco was in the crosshairs of the Imperial court of Archduke Albert of Hapsburg (winner of Custoza, the one who pulled the strings in the court) for an entirely different reason. He wanted to turn Arco into a resort for rest and treatment in the winter. The town, thanks to its climate, was perfect during the winter period. Thus, people of the aristocracy and crowned heads transferred themselves here for the winter; even Empress Elizabeth of Austria honoured Arco with her presence in 1889. Just go to Caffé Casinò to find a visible trace of the Austrian past. There are two events that remember this era and once again transform Arco into a sumptuous Hapsburg city: the event of the Historical Re-enactment (usually in September) and Carnival.
